Necklace Layering Guide

Necklace layering is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon — and for good reason. As Bri from DesignLoveFest demonstrated in this shoot for us last year, when you layer new and existing pieces, you get more wear out of your collection while keeping your everyday faves feeling fresh. (Also: it looks cool.) Whether you choose to go experimental and mix different metals and colors, or take a more minimal approach with matching tones, there’s a way to layer necklaces that feels like you. Find your way in to this trend with our guide on how to get the layered look.

CREATE SPACE

When layering necklaces, it is important to remember that balance is key — get the spacing right, and you’re halfway there. The main consideration? Each piece should complement the rest and not detract by looking cluttered or tangled. To achieve this, vary chain lengths so that each pendant gets its own space to shine. Our chain lengths are adjustable between 18” and 16” so you can layer to your heart’s desire.

FIND BALANCE

When it comes to selecting which pieces to stack, the key is to strike the right balance. Too many larger pieces will look heavy, so it’s better to opt for a statement pendant and then add some smaller necklaces to create a cascading look. Our carat sizes vary from our daintier 1/4 carat styles up to our show-stopping 1-1/8 carat — pair these together, and you’ve got yourself a well-balanced look.

STYLE YOUR WAY

The best part? How you choose to style your stack is completely up to you. If you’re into mixing things up with contrasting metals, great! If you’re more into a pared-back look with minimal, matching pieces, also great! These tips are to help you find your way into this trend, so let them guide you as you craft a layered look that’s uniquely you. One final tip: Consider the neckline you’re wearing. Plunge necklines are great for longer chains and more drama, while simple crew-neck tees can really make statement pendants stand out. Okay, now go forth and layer!
