Twin sisters Corianna and Brianna Dotson co-founded their Coco & Breezy eyewear line in 2009, and instantly became big hitters in accessories. Not content with just storming the eyewear market, the sisters also DJ, and their new single “Convo” (out 6/26!) has instantly made its way to the top of our Summer playlists. We asked them what it’s like to take ‘twinning’ to a whole new level.
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOUR RELATIONSHIP AS SIBLINGS WOULD ALSO WORK IN BUILDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS TOGETHER?
Coco: Growing up, we were very inseparable and had a lot of the same interests. When we were 15, we were put in a position to help our family out so we applied to our first job at a Chinese fast-food restaurant called LeeAnn Chin —and we both got hired. After that, we worked 3 jobs – all at the same places.
Breezy: We worked really well together. As siblings, we always got along and know to not put our personal feelings into work related issues. We are very grateful that we share the same big goals!
HOW HAVE YOU FOUND WORKING TOGETHER THROUGH THE QUARANTINE?
Breezy: Working together during quarantine has been a blessing. We also live together, so during those emotional times we have been able to be there for each other. Even being able to give each other a big hug has helped!
Coco: I also think we have been able to have more “sister” time. Before, we were always in work mode -- but during quarantine we have made new routines together like meditating, yoga and cooking.
WHEN IT COMES TO DECISION MAKING, IS ONE OF YOU MORE LIKELY TO TAKE THE LEAD?
Breezy: It actually depends on what we have to decide. We are both really good at knowing who should make a decision in the right situations. When it comes to negotiating, Coco knows that I am the decision-maker and I get the last word.
Coco: Throw your ego away. If you are working together, understand that you are working towards the same goal. If you do not get along, it’s better to part ways. We are an interesting case because we are twins and best friends...so I am speaking based on our own experience. We get along very well!
DO YOUR REGULAR WORKDAY ROUTINES DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER?
Coco: Since we live together, we also share similar routines. We actually really enjoy meditating and cooking together before we start working. It’s awesome because we can hold each other accountable, yet keep each other motivated!
HOW DO YOU DRAW THE LINE BETWEEN WORK HOURS AND SOCIAL HOURS? DO THEY TEND TO BLEND?
Breezy: They tend to blend because a lot of our work is so much fun that it feels like social hours. Working during quarantine, we do believe in having a healthy balance now with social hours. We are both typically introverts, so now we are finding the importance to have a little social balance.
